Let's Address Some Lunacy
In Washington State Politics
About a month ago, an embarrassing debate flared up within political circles in Washington State. It even hit the national media.
The question at issue in the arguments that briefly flourished:
Is the United States a Democracy?
or
Is the United States a Republic?
As with all remotely political questions in these times, both teams took a side, and stuck to that side. Facts and reason be damned.
But, facts and reason do exist, so this question can be answered, and answered correctly.
The answer is of course that the United States, and for that matter Washington State are…
Wait for it…
Democratic Republics!
Yep, that’s right. The Democrats of Washington might scream that we are a Democracy, and the Republicans of Washington might scream that we are a Republic, but neither side is telling the entire truth.
For that matter, neither side seems to know the entire truth.
And that’s a problem.
It’s a problem, because it seems that in more and more cases we are being governed by people who are not serious. And if we hope to thrive as a society, we had better start electing serious people. We’d better start paying attention to serious people.
But, it’s more fun to pay attention to the Clowns on the Left and the Right. So that’s where our attention goes, and from that, to those Clowns the money flows.
We need to stop that.
Serious people deserve the attention we give to Clowns.
And if we hope to be governed by serious people, they need our attention, and the campaign money it brings.
So, that’s it.
My little post that shouldn’t need to be made is reaching its conclusion.
The United States is a Democratic Republic.
It is a Republic because those who make our laws do so on behalf of large numbers of people. The people don’t do so directly.
It is a Democracy because we elect those people who make the laws on our behalf. They aren’t a part of an aristocracy.
A Democratic Republic. Why is that so hard for the Clowns to understand?
I thought we were an autonomous collective?
