Of course, Fran Lebowitz can afford not to use those things. :)

I'm the same way with tech I guess. Even though I've been using Macs since the mid-80s (I'm 60) and was one of the first bloggers in the mid-90s, I don't have a smartphone (I have a flip phone and still use a landline), I've never texted anyone, and I read print newspapers.

I guess I like to have one foot in 2026 and one foot in 1956.

One thing that I hate about phones and the internet is that they used to be just tools. They were places that we visited. Now most of us live there.

I imagine that she's got people, and having people would indeed make things easier!

I too started out as an Apple guy, my first was an Apple 2 in the mid-80's. I even stuck with Apple during the really bad years. But, I don't know, three or four years ago I switched over to Google's Chromebook system. I find that it does everything that I need it to do, and at a significantly lower cost.

Alas though, I no longer have a flip phone. I stuck with one as long as I could, but eventually my wife put her foot down and insisted that I get a modern one. I could take it or leave it, but there are a couple of things that make it worthwhile for me. The high quality camera, and the GPS. It allowed me to get rid of the stand alone GPS gizmo I was using before.

As for newspapers, I'm with you 100%. I love my newspaper, and think that newspapers are vital for good government, especially good local government. Without a local paper, who would root out local corruption? We still have an excellent newspaper in my small city, a rare thing in this day and age, but it seems to be going strong.

As for the success of that local paper, I believe that it is because it was purchased by a local man who seems to really understand how to leverage, and profit from, online content, and that profit drives the ability to report quality news. I think that someone coming in from the advertising world, instead of the publishing world is what saved the paper.

If your wife emails you or texts you with the photo attached, you can then save/download the photo to your phone. That's how I bridge the Apple/Android divide as a fellow hat wearing Luddite.

Thanks! I appreciate you standing with a fellow Luddite! 🤠

I imagine homing pigeons might make an intriguing alternative to cellular devices with the added benefit of being able to train pigeons to leave parking tickets on poorly parked vehicles... Though I'm not sure which is better between the data rates or the feed bill.
