The problem exists in the gray spaces. Without special legal protections many officers wouldn’t want to risk taking the job. With them it makes it difficult to remove bad actors from their roles.

I don’t understand how they can reasonably deny the damages. Or how this could be considered an acceptable practice.

Yes, the Jury got it right, that's some bullshit right there. It's shit like this that gives law enforcement a bad name, and someone needs to lose their job, and spend some time in the crossbar hilton.
